DAY 4: FES – MOULAY DRISS- VOLUBILIS – MEKNES

On the way to Meknes we will go back in time to the third century by visiting the most important archaeological site in Morocco. Volubilis is the best preserved Roman ruins in this part of North Africa. This Roman ruins were listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. A 45-minute guided tour program here.

Volubilis we’re on our way to Meknes named after a Berber tribe known as Miknasa in medieval North African sources. Meknes was the capital of Morocco under the reign of Moulay Ismail (1672-1727). He built it in the artfully designed barns, really fascinating architecture of small windows, massive walls where it is used to store grain and hay to feed their horses to 15,000 nonfood humans. We also stop to take pictures of Bab Al Mansour, the great gate built in the 11th century by King AL Mansour Adahbi.

DAY 5: MEKNES – MIDELT – ZIZ VALLEY – ERFOUD – MERZOUGA DESERT

This is a day of driving, where we find different colors of the kingdom leaving the old Moroccan city of Meknes. On the way we pass the most modern city in the country, Ifrane. This Berber name Ifrane means caves and is nicknamed in Morocco as a bit of Switzerland, as it is a very green city and is a ski resort in the Middle Atlas of Morocco, due to its high altitude in 1665 meters. Ifrane is well known for the private university Brotherhood, established in 1997 by the King of Morocco Hassan II and King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. All classes are taught in English and is an international university. Lunch will be scheduled in a Berber village called Midelt. We cross the harsh mountains still settled by a large Berber community. The landscapes here include palm oasis in Jbel Ayachi (at 3747 m).

We then headed down the curves to join the pre-Saharan zone, via Errachidia and Erfoud, which is famous for its pottery and quarrying of interesting fossils. Fossils are a major industry in Erfoud, about 350 million years ago, the region around Erfoud was a part of the vast ocean. We continue our way and discover the nomadic life of the Touareg people visiting Khamlia, a town where nothing has changed over the centuries. Either lunch here in the village of Khamlia or back to our hotel and lunch. After a short break we go on a camel ride to meet one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever seen, the magnificent sunset in the middle of the high dunes of Merzouga. Tonight we will stay in a camp in the desert Berber tents and enjoy a wonderful view of the stars.

DAY 7: MERZOUGA – RISSANI – TODRA GORGES

Morning visit Rissani and the mausoleum of the founder of the Alawite dynasty of Morocco, this silent city was the ancient capital of Tafilalet and its location it is at a crossroads between north and south that brought the city to a major state of a former major center caravan. 127 km of Rissani are the big guns of Morocco Todra Gorges which lie beyond the central high Atlas Mountains. Here, the contrasting landscapes remind visitors of Colorado, with its high plateau, gorges, deep canyons, and peaks sometimes divided by erosion. Several peaks in this area over 4,000 m, 2,500 m with Jbel Saghro and Jbel Mgoun to 4068 m is the highest peak of this part of the High Atlas. This area is populated by Berbers. Here you can enjoy a walk among the fabulous canyons. Dinner and overnight at a hotel.

DAY 8: TODRA GORGES – DADES VALLEY – OUARZAZATE

From the big guns of Todra we travel the road of 1000 kasbahs. There are huge kasbahs on both sides of the road. Some of those old fortified houses are restored but unfortunately many of them are ruins. A visit to one of those kasbah is scheduled Amarhidil watching Kasbah. We pass  through a village called Boumalne located on the edge of Dades valley which rises in the mountains of the High Atlas, giving life to a large Berber community for its rich agriculture. Along this valley, another valley, called Valley of Roses. This valley gives birth to a rose that locals produce different cosmetic products such as soap, perfumes and skin creams. The locals celebrate here this rose by organizing a national festival in late April.

Directions to Ouarzazate (Hollywood of Africa, the gateway to the desert). This is a city located in the middle of a bare plateau, south of the High Atlas Mountains. It is mainly inhabited by Berbers, who constructed many of the prominent kasbahs and building for which the area is known. One of the building is Taourirt Kasbah created in the 17th century. This city is nicknamed Hollywood of Africa, as has been pointed out as a film location decisions, with the largest studies of Morocco inviting many international film companies to shoot their films like Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Living Daylights (1987), the last Temptation of Christ (1988), the Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Martin Scorsese Kundun (1997) and Babel (2005). Dinner and overnight in a hotel.

DAY 9: OUARZAZATE – AIT BENAHDDOU – TAROUDANT

We visit the fortified Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, which was built in the 11th century Once up on a time in this Kasbah was the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It is located on a hill next to Ounila River and has some beautiful examples of kasbahs, which unfortunately was damaged during every storm and windstorm. Most of the town’s inhabitants now live in a more modern town on the other side of the river; However, about five families still live within this Kasbah ..

After the visit of Ait Ben Haddou, we will go through the town of Taroudant for hotel accommodation.

DAY 10: TAROUDANT – AGADIR – ESSAOUIRA

About 70 kilometers from Taroudant, is the city of Agadir. The capital of the Berbers since the Berber kingdom is the largest city. Agadir is a modern city located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, near the foot of the Atlas Mountains. It has the most important fishing and commercial port of Morocco, is the first sardine port in the world, (exporting cobalt, manganese, zinc and citrus). It is also a seaside resort with sandy beaches. Because of its large buildings, wide roads, modern hotels and European style cafes, Agadir is not a typical city of traditional Morocco, but it is a modern, busy and dynamic city very famous for its sea food.

Along the ocean we drove for nearly 200 kms to Essaouira. In the Atlantic Ocean, this city has painted white with blue doors and windows houses, a well-designed image. Since the 16th century, Essaouira has also been known by its Portuguese name of Mogador. The Berber name means the wall, a reference to the fortress walls that originally surrounded the city. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Essaouira.

DAY 11: ESSAOUIRA (ESSAOUIRA EXPLORE AT YOUR OWN PACE)

Today our Morocco Exploring Tour from Casablanca continues and you can explore best of Essaouira is that it is well known for its kite surfing and windsurfing, with the powerful trade wind. Brings together artists from around the world. Although it focused on the Gnaoua music, including rock, jazz and reggae. In early 1952, the film director and actor Orson Welles made his film Othello. Now there is a square named after Orson Welles. Or you could spend the day relaxing in the hotel.

Argan oil is produced by cooperatives of several women and used to prepare the couscous, salads, and it is traditionally used as a treatment for skin diseases before being founded as good enough for cosmetics European manufacturers . A stop at one of these cooperatives is worth seeing how the Berber women pressed Argan fruit in hand to extract this precious oil. We arrived at our hotel in Marrakech and if time permits we will go out for a walk.

In the morning a full guided tour is scheduled to discover Marrakech is known as the “Red City”. Marrakech is the oldest and most important in the history of Moroccan imperial city. Marrakech has the largest traditional market (souk) in Morocco and also has one of the busiest squares in Africa and the world, Djemaa el Fna. The square is filled with storytellers, water sellers, dancers, musicians and snake charming. At night the square becomes a huge open-air restaurant.

During our visit we will see the Koutoubia Mosque, built in the 12th century during the reign of the Almoravid dynasty. Let’s go through the streets and narrow allies in the old city.
